I am a lifelong Catholic who has enjoyed the outdoors since I was a toddler. I grew up in St. Anthony within blocks of "Nordeast" Minneapolis and went to St. Charles Borromeo. I then went to Totino-Grace High School in Fridley and graduated in 1979.
I went on to the University of Minnesota and got a degree in Journalism with a minor in Latin in 1986. I landed a job right out of college at Sun Newspapers, a local suburban weekly chain, as a sports editor. I was there for almost 10 years and did both writing and photography and even wrote an outdoors column for several years. I came to The Catholic Spirit in 1996 and have been the staff photographer since.
I am married with four children (three boys and a girl), two with my current wife, Julie, and two with my first wife, Jennifer, who died of cancer in 1995.
I enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, hiking and nature photography. My favorites are wild turkey hunting, bass fishing and scenic landscape photography in the mountains. I grew up with four brothers and was fortunate that my dad took all of us hunting and fishing with him. I now do the same thing with my children.
